Coach Matt Campbell said Monday that “we’re waiting to see where Kyle’s at. Kyle was able to practice a little on Sunday.“If Kyle wouldn’t be ready to go, you would see Brock start. It’s a little unsettled.”

Purdy was just short of spectacular while leading the Cyclones to a 48-42 victory against then-No. 21 Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

After replacing Zeb Noland on the second possession, Purdy went on to complete 18 of 23 passes for 318 yards and four touchdowns in Iowa State’s first Big 12 Conference win. The 18-year-old had 84 more yards on the ground and a touchdown on 19 rushes.

The Smoking Musket Pick ‘Em Gauntlet is an online college pick ‘em game where we will try to pick the winners of the weekly Big 12 contests plus Yahoo! editors’ selected games (usually the games involving the top 25 teams). We do pick against the spread (when available).

There are usually 20-30 games to pick each week and each correct pick is worth one point. The winner (excluding Musket staff) will be the person at the end of the regular season who has the most correct picks/points. Points are cumulative, so don’t worry if you happen to miss a week or two. We will award the winner a WVU Nike T-shirt at the conclusion of the games in December.

All participants are subject to the Official Rules as determined by SB Nation.

We actually filled the first group, so we had to open a second league to fit everyone in. The second league will serve solely as an extension of the first league, and is not a standalone league. If you are in the second league, you are still competing with those in the first league.

I think that this game will go better for the Mountaineers than most people would expect. After a rough week with four turnovers, I think Will Grier will bounce back and lead WVU to win by double digits on the road in a tough environment.

This is going to be a tough, weird game. I think this game puts Grier back in the Heisman talk. Last season, West Virginia lost two games 31-24 when it failed to produce a game-tying drive. That doesn’t happen this year as Grier throws a go-ahead touchdown to David Sills and then Kenny Bigelow and David Long stifle Brock Purdy on his two-minute drill.

West Virginia has faced a true road test in Lubbock and passed, but Ames is a special place where magic is real. I think that last week was more of a Turnover Luck abberation than it was the start of a trend. Will Grier bounces back (from a 350 yard/4 TD day) and cleans up the sloppiness as West Virginia picks up a hard fought road win.

If there’s one thing everyone should know about Iowa State, it’s that they’re always better than their record indicates. Combine that with the fact that this is a night game in Ames in which the Cyclones are breaking out new uniforms, and the Mountaineers should be on high alert.

This game will likely be the toughest test we face outside of Texas and Oklahoma. Look for this one to stay close late into the game until Will Grier’s elite-ness just becomes too much for Iowa State to handle.
